To the Editor:

I found the letter from B M regarding trash in D very encouraging. From my nearly five years of experience picking up trash in the streets, parking lots and ditches of D, besides stopping littering, of course, I would like to suggest the following:

1. The most important thing is to secure trash, especially plastic bags, so that they can’t be blown away by the wind. Use bags to collect trash to put in home bins. Insist that owners, users, and operators of dumpsters keep them closed.
2. Before mowing, check the yard and pick up trash so that you don’t mow over it, breaking it into pieces and spreading the pieces everywhere.

One thing that I was very frustrated by was when a fast food restaurant on L H removed the trash can from their storefront as if they were claiming ownership of the right to throw away trash. Previously, I had used that can to throw away the trash I picked up in their parking lot. My cleaning the parking lot was actually helping their business, wasn’t it? We need to promote a better spirit of philanthropy among D business owners.

Another practice I do not understand is when bushes and trees start collecting windblown trash, instead of cleaning up the trash, some people cut them down. We should clean up the trash on and around living things, not killing the living things themselves.

I believe that trash invites more trashy people to town. I already notice some signs of trashy people in town, such as those who leave heavy wet used diapers everywhere, worse than regular litter for me to pick up. In addition to causing a public health hazard, what message does it send to children of such parents?

Believing in the power of education, we should send a message to trashy people that this town is not the place for them. I believe that we have the opportunity to live in a beautiful parklike, clean area throughout D, once each of us pays a little attention to the environment we live, work, and play in every day.
