怒ることの喜び

アサヒドットコム悩みのるつぼ２０１４年１１月１日より、
２０１０年１０月に、９３歳（当時）のステファン・エセルが書いた『怒れ！憤れ！』という小さな本が、フランスで２００万部を超えるベストセラーになりました。
エセルは、ナチスと闘ったレジスタンスの闘士で、「レジスタンス運動を支えてきたのは、怒りだった」と振り返り、若者たちに「レジスタンスの遺産を、レジスタンスの理想を、よみがえらせ、伝承せよ」「金融市場が世界を支配し平和と民主主義を脅かすのを容認してはならない」と呼びかけるのです。
エセルは「怒る理由は、単なる感情よりも、自ら関わろうとする意志から生まれる」といい、世界に存在する「許し難いこと」を見つけるため、若者に「目をよく見開き、探さなければならない」と訴えます。そして、無関心を批判し、「どうせ自分には何もできない。自分の手には負えない」という姿勢は、人間を人間たらしめている大切なものを失う、といいます。「その一つが怒りであり、怒りの対象に自ら挑む意志である」のです。
自分で抑えきれなくなるほどの「怒り」を抱えているということは、まず何より、あなたが人間であることの証しです。人間は不正義に対して「怒り」をぶつけ、より良い社会をつくってきました。
しかし、日本の社会は過剰に同調を強います。言い方を変えれば、本質的な問題に対し、「怒る」ことを封じる社会なのです。そして、本当に怒らなければならないことを我慢させて、見て見ぬふりを強います。ところが普段、人間を人間たらしめている「怒り」を不自然に抑えていると、人間が本性として抱えている「怒り」を自らコントロールできなくなります。
普段は争いごとが嫌いというあなたが突然、「怒り」に支配され「切れてしまう」という原因にはこうした背景があるのではないでしょうか。とすれば問題の解決は、怒らないようにすることではありません。怒りを、正当な理由をもって闘うべき対象に向けることです。もっと大きな悪に対して怒っていれば、些細（ささい）なことへのいらだちは少なくなるはずです。今の日本は怒らなければいけないことがいっぱいありますから。
エセルさんの本は絶対に読まねば。私をほめてくれるために書いたような本だ！！！（笑）というわけで、きのうの夜、以下の文章を地元の新聞社に投稿した。あのばばあ、覚えておけ！！！（笑）
One of my hobbies is antiquing, and I routinely visit shops in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin to add to my collection. I was so excited to see an antique store open recently in downtown DeKalb. I enjoyed shopping there a few weeks ago. but last Friday I was treated as if I was a criminal by one of the owners of the store.
This owner stood very close to me when I started looking at antiques, and I instantly felt that she was suspicious of me. A few minutes later she asked me "what are you looking for?" and "you are not putting things in your purse" as my right hand was in my purse because I was looking for my car keys and a pair of reading glasses. She even threatened me, saying "I'll make you dump out your purse!"
When I asked her, "are you thinking that I am stealing?", she repeated twice, "you are messing in your purse."
She justified her suspicion by saying that they sell a lot of small things that could be stolen.
My questions are:
1) Why can't customers, especially non-white customers, check their own possessions in their purses while shopping?
2) Would any thief try to steal something by looking in her purse?
According to the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, this store is not member of the organization and they are not responsible for the business practices of the owner. But I know that many people are working hard to boost the business economy in downtown DeKalb. I would suggest that this "antique" attitude of business owners, using "suspicion" to justify racist attitudes, jeopardizes the entire community.
The store definitely lost a good customer. I am very sorry for the co-owner of the store, who must run the business with an unprofessional partner.
